Rhonda specialised in the increasingly popular Interior and Architectural Design programme within the Access course. Fully aware that design does not only apply to humans, she set about designing a Guinea Pig Shelter. Inital research, maquettes and drawings informed this plan, showing a seqential view of the shelter. A scaled down model, made from balsa wood (her first ever!) completed the project.

The Little Girl and the Wolf. Saki Watanabe, 2010

Taking the story of Little Red Riding Hood as inspiration, Saki wrote and illustrated her own fairy tale 'The Little Girl and the Wolf'. Her beautiful drawings were created in an original way. She watched Youtube clips of 1940s-50s performances of the works of Shakespeare. When she found a character and pose that she liked, she paused the movie, took out her sketchbook and drew directly from the screen. She adjusted the drawings, added tone and texture and achieved a fabulous outcome
When Saki applied for university, both Chelsea and Middlesex felt that with what she had achieved on the Access course, she could skip the first year of their degree programme and go directly into the second year!

Lea made a dress out of bacon and wore it in this performance. She then proceeded to eat a bowl of real fur, pausing only to regurgitate it into a plastic bag. Lea is a vegetarian.

Brigitte draws incredibly detailed images onto canvas. She does not use a pencil however - every line on the canvas is painstakingly embroidered by hand. This is typical of her work, a real achievement, especially as most of her work is large scale. She was accepted to study for a BA in drawing at Camberwell School of Art, University of the Arts.

Michelle produced a set of drawings illustrating the story of 'Alice in Wonderland'. Bringing a new twist to the process, she dressed her daughter's doll as Alice and photographed her in a variety of settings. Sarah decided to re-design a series of Jane Austin novels, aiming specifically at the Japanese market. In contrast to existing designs they are monochromatic rather than colour, photographic rather than painted and featured half life-size, Japanese dolls rather than humans! The cover is on the left as Japanese read from right to left.

Sarah was the first of our students to go on to study Games Art at university.

As part of her practice, Leah decided to have a tattoo; the process was filmed for later use. In this insalation the seediness of a backstreet tattoo parlour is echoed through peeling wallpaper, dirty furnishings and dubious wiring. Girls, Girls, Girls! Viesha Tews, 2010

Viesha produced a range of illustrations around the theme of 1950s-60s girl bands and the sexploitation/music movies of the same period. Line drawings were scanned into the computer along with a collection of fabrics and textures. The disparate elements were carefully integrated to produce a great set of illustrations. Viesha extended her work to produce wallpaper and decorative hangings. She was commissioned to re-style the interior of a retro clothes shop as a result of this work, before going on to study illustration at degree level.

Nikki produced a set of four boxed ceramic mugs with the theme of 'Moustache Madness'. The beautifully designed boxes, making full use of retro fonts and layout, feature individuals who possessed noteable moustaches - in this case, Salvador Dali. When the pround owner drinks from the mug they too posses Dali's 'tache. Others in the series include Stalin, Groucho Marx and Tom Sellick.

Self-portrait, map and digital manipulation.

Alison made the connection between street maps and the human cardio-vascular system. Using Photoshop, a scanned map was re-sized to fit on her back; It was then warped to replicate the shape of the body and feathered so the edges would integrate better with the flesh. Finally the opacity was reduced so integration would be even more complete. This is one of a series of images.

Disposable latex gloves, chicken wire, light fitting.

Jenny inflated dozens of rubber gloves and attached them to a chicken wire structure. She then connected this to a light fitting to create a lampshade that glows eerily when switched on. For her end of year show she created an installation with matching chairs, rug and wallpaper. Jenny went on to study product design at Central Saint Martins.

Hand made book, wax, acetate, glass, wood and mould.

Martin made a book out of hand made paper. Into this he catalogued 104 embarrassing incidents, noting the time, place and date. These were so shameful that they could not be seen by anyone else and so he encased the book in wax. For further protection the book was the sealed in a glass-topped box. Tantalisingly, he records his methodology on a sheet of clear film that can be viewed through the glass without divulging specific events. He encouraged mould to grow on the wax.

Anorexia Top Trumps. Lee Crowley, 2007

Digitally created set of playing cards.

Lee chose to draw attention to Anorexia Nervosa, a serious topic, by using a trivial medium thereby emphasising its shock value. He produced his own set of 'Top Trumps' playing cards. In the real world these are commercially manufactured around the themes of cars, ships and airplanes; the aim is to trump your opponent with a card that has a higher value. Cards about cars for example would give numerical values for speed, petrol consumption, safety etc. Each of lee's cards features an anorexic model and he rates their highest weight, lowest weight, best binge, suicide attempts, number of psychoses and life expectancy. The back of each card shows the title, with a toilet bowl (vomiting) representing the letter 'O', diet pills and the anorexia food pyramid diagram.

Not Too Big, Not Too Small. 16. Naila Mahmud, 2007

Canvas, rocks, sand, biro, Lazertran. 5' x 3'
Naila discovered that stoning women to death for adultery is still practiced in rural communities in certain parts of the world. This plaintive work is in response to that. When a woman is convicted, the man is given 50 lashes; a hole is dug and the woman put into it so that only her head is visible above the ground. The whole village gathers around and hurls rocks at her head until she is dead. Sharia law says that the rocks cannot be too small or she will not die. They cannot be too big or she will die too quickly. They need to be just the right size to cause a long and agonising death. These chilling words have been transferred onto rocks using water-slip transfer paper and placed around a hole in the ground. Drawings of women who have met this fate have been made in ballpoint pen on rocks, also surrounding the hole. The photographs show a sample of the rocks and the entire installation.

Urban Riot. Mike Wagner, 2006

Urban Riot boxed World Cup game, including football supporter and police figurines.

In the year England qualified for the European Football Championship in Germany Michael celebrated by creating 'Urban Riot', a professional looking board game. To play it you simply roll out the green fabric football pitch, choose to be either drunken and bloodied English football supporters or helmeted German riot police, and pit your wits against your opponent in a good natured orgy of violence. The figurines were painstakingly adapted from toy soldiers; the box was designed using Photoshop.

Know What is Real. Jenny Efstathiou, 2006

In this reflective piece of work Jenny initially created a pack of small cards, each one looking at something important and deeply personal. To move the work forward she enlarged the cards to poster size and went into central London to give them to other people to hold and be photographed. There happened to be an anti-war protest in Trafalgar Square giving her plenty of material to work with. This development gave the messages an entirely new context and visually there are interesting moments - look at the way the sunlight is framing the woman in red in the foreground.

Poster produced as part of a Tuberculosis awareness screening campaign.

Jess was tasked with seeing how young people could be targeted in the fight against Tuberculosis. Her solution was to have the headline wording on the poster read like a 'text' message. There are few posters that use this technique and it was especially eye-catching and appealing to teenagers. The white shape at the bottom of the poster is for institutions to write details of the latest screening. The poster was used successfully by NHS.

This is one of a series of snakes made by Sarah; they are life-size and life-like. This was achieved successfully due to her technique of embossing the still moist clay with real snakeskin prior to firing. Photographing each snake in its natural environment was effective and made the photographs as important as the finished ceramics.

Before joining the Access course Triona was a newsreader on 'News at Ten', a reporter and a published author. She brought this wealth of experience to the programme (as do others), which in many ways was reflected in her work. This particular installation explores memory, what is real and not real and the duality of personality. On closer inspection the photographs on the dressing table tell a very different story when the back of the frames are viewed in the mirror.

Novelty jelly mould, acrylic resin, dead rabbit.

Teresa bought a jelly mould in the shape of a bunny rabbit wearing a big bow tie. Into this she chopped two real rabbits and poured acrylic resin into the mould. When the resin had set the mould was discarded revealing pieces of dead animal floating yet set in the bunny rabbit shaped sculpture, challenging the way we view animals as pets and animals as meat.

Diana took Monet's iconic painting of the Houses of Parliament as the starting point for this canvas. World Anorexia Championship Belt. Jess Hammond 2006

Leather, brass, resin, diamante, gold chain, gold paint.

Jess was looking at anorexia nervosa as a way of representing self-image. Her research led her to chat rooms where she found sufferers to be competitive about how much weight they had lost. This evoked feelings of competition and the conclusion that at the end of competitions you win something. In this case, rather like boxers or wrestlers, the prize is a champion's belt. The ‘Anorexia Nervosa Featherweight World Championship’ belt combines humour, irony and making skills. Jess is an example of how someone can bring skills from their previous existence (Her mother was a leather craft worker who taught her how to make belts and wristbands as a child) and combine these with newly acquired critical thinking skills to produce work that would have been unthinkable before joining the course.

Engraved stones, sea shells, lazertran in wooden tray.
Dealing with positive and negative aspects of his life, Peter used a found drawer as the vehicle for a collection of objects. Positive messages appear on seashells through the use of water-based transfer paper. The stones, containing more negative thoughts were created differently. Informed by Ian Scott Findlay and his huge stone sculpture with the word 'Dream' carved into it, Peter created a number of smaller stones. Although they appear to be real the stones are made from air-dry Flymo clay with the lettering stamped into them by leather emboss lettering tools. When dry and hard they were painted to give a realistic finish.

Lucia is a classically trained musician, which proved crucial in the context of this film. The image above represents a still from a movie created to explore the effects of light and shadows on illuminated coloured glass. Pieces of glass are anthromorphasised throughout the film to a piano soundtrack, with stunning results.

Jenny's approach to graphic design is both serious and creative. Here she has produced a range of double-sided postcards and posters as part of a campaign against female genital mutilation (two examples featured here). The images are carefully composed to draw the viewer in. They encompass a range of ages and cultures; the colour palette is consistent and the link between front and back is faultless. A terrible subject addressed with power and sympathy.

It's hard to believe now but once upon a time the Game Boy was at the cutting edge of technology. Niki has devised a cross-stitch (old tech meets new tech) 'cosy' to cover the machine after a hard day's gaming. She also made a pair of black thumb covers embellished with white Space Invaders, to wear whilst playing. Niki went on to study Textile Design at Goldsmiths.

Tina put this sculpture together whilst looking at male perceptions of female worth. The lips and breasts are made from latex, the lab bottle represents the uterus and the feet have been cast in clear resin.

Mariko works only with re-cycled materials. Before joining the Access course she worked on art projects with villages in Africa. Photograph of friend, digitally transformed into a 'Manga' character. One from a series of six.
In response to work on the theme 'Japan' Sophie started to look at Manga drawing techniques. After mastering the style she felt it was too ubiquitous and decided to take her work in another direction. She photographed a number of friends and using Photoshop turned them into Mange/Anime type characters. The eyes and chin work especially well.

During the early part of the course, as part of the art & design basic skills students learn a range of mark making techniques. One of these is painting bleach onto black ink to achieve an effect. Bleach on wet ink creates a diffuse, abstract result and on dry ink a more controlled, drawn finish. Later in the course Mark chose to specialise in illustration and utilised these techniques further. He made a set of drawings of London hotels, photocopied them and cut away all the windows. This was then glued onto canvas and ink and bleach were painted over where the windows had been removed. Coloured inks were applied to complete the illustration.

During a visit to the British Museum Finnula became interested in the intricate knots that joined samurai swords to the wearers' belts. These were recorded in detail in a sketchbook and developed in the studio. She chose to represent them on a huge scale using black paint and an extra large brush, creating swirling almost calligraphic shapes. Other pieces built out from the picture surface using card and paper resulting in a frieze/sculpture-like effect.

Whilst investigating Japanese religion, Elizabeth discovered that thousands of different gods were worshiped. She became especially interested in 'Awashima-Sama', the goddess of sewing. Research told her that every year ladies gather at a shrine to the goddess and present her with thimbles and needles, whilst saying things like 'Keep me safe whlle sewing' and 'Thank you for your long and strenuous struggle with coarse cloth’. This hanging is a tribute to her. Elizabeth went on to study Textile Design at Goldsmiths.

Bowl, Phoebe Allen. 2005

Phoebe was a graphics student who through this work demonstrates our philosophy of breaking down the walls between disciplines. Working on a bowl is as valid for a graphic designer as it is for a ceramicist. For her major project Phoebe silk-screened a huge poster for an imaginary Japanese horror film. She then produced a press pack for the Oscar ceremonies consisting of poster, set of badges, plastic ID card and Japanese tea bowl. The face on the bowl was taken from the original poster and the lips from the face image. These were printed onto water based decal transfer paper and transferred onto the bowl.

We sent students to the British Museum to draw the statues but Yumi had different ideas. She had never been there before and was captivated by the dome over the courtyard; she spent the day drawing it. Back in the studio she produced a series of relief prints and large abstracted drawings.

As part of a graphics/illustration specialist project, students were asked to design a set of double-sided recipe cards and a wallet to contain them. They were encouraged to move away from lasagna and produce something more creative. Sigita decided spiders had been overlooked in the recipe card department and produced a set of cards targeting the arachnid market. Each of the set of 10 featured a hand crafted image on the front and recipes containing aphids cooked in dew etc on the back. This worked well and adhered to our graphic design philosophy where the computer is only one tool amongst many for generating responses to a brief.

Students were asked to produce a body of work connected to ideas about 'Food'. Lucy's approach was to investigate those parts of the animal that are not used for human consumption and spent many happy hours touring the butcher’s shops of Hackney taking photographs and making drawings. When she returned to the studio she embarked on a series of paintings about the heads of dead animals (called 'Deadheads'). This one is a chicken; it was the first time she had painted on canvas.

Jennifer was investigating crucifixions; this resulted in a series of photographs where she assumed various crucifixion-style poses. The images were digitally manipulated and silk-screened onto canvas. The canvas was then stretched over frames and displayed in the shape of a crucifix connected by a gold cord that wraps around her wrist. The top canvas includes a crown of thorns embellished with blue flowers. The flowers are made from tampons and they are blue because that is the colour of the dye used in TV adverts to show how absorbent they are. This piece represents Jennifer’s extremely painful periods and how she felt she was being crucified every month.

Hand printed, stuffed fabric doll. 11 inches x 8 inches x 4 inches
Lots of Hyun's work was about death and the many and varied ways there are of being killed. This is one of a set of six dolls all made from different self-designed silk-screened camouflage fabric. Each one has been injured in different ways (eyes hanging out, leg missing etc). Hyun progressed to complete an MA in animation at Kingston University and is now studying for a PhD in the USA.

Starched muslin, light box. 65 inches x 40 inches x 20 inches.
Eleanor was working with themes of insecurity and vulnerability. She used the foetal position as her starting point and produced a series of drawings across a range of media and then small clay maquettes. To move the work forward she created a remarkably life-like, full-size plaster cast of one of her fellow students. The final stage in the creative process was to take a sheet of muslin and drape it over the statue; she then starched the fabric. When the fabric was dry it became stiff; she removed the fabric (that had assumed the shape of the body) and threw the statue away. The finished piece was displayed on a specially made light box so light shone through the thin, hollow gauze making the figure even more ethereal and ghost-like.

Papier mache, fairy lights and enamel paint on Volkswagen bonnet. 60 inches x 38 inches.
Students were set a project on the theme 'Mexico' to tie in with the major Aztec exhibition in London and the opening of 'The Mexico Gallery' (street art/folk art) in Hampstead. Richie discovered during his research that Mexico was the only country still producing the old style VW Beetle. Building on this knowledge he bought an old Beetle bonnet from a scrap yard and turned it into a sculpture. The painted surface is a representation of typical religious folk art paintings found in most Mexican homes. He embellished it further with small buttons depicting religious figures and drilled a series of holes into which he set fairy lights; there is a light behind the ventilation grill. When turned on the whole piece glows in the dark. The sculpture featured in an exhibition of our students' work at the Mexico Gallery and was sold on the opening night for £950.00!

Milk chocolate, dark chocolate and white chocolate on canvas. 30 inches x 20 inches.
As part of a project based on 'Mexico', Emma researched around the topic and discovered this was where chocolate was first developed; she decided to work in chocolate. After first making sculptures out of it she tried painting with it. After much experimentation she devised a methodology and produced this canvas entirely out of chocolate. It is a portrait of Kate Moss gorging on the confection and is called ' You can have your Kate and eat it'; even the white background is made from chocolate.

Adrian was a student in the inaugural year of the Access course and was the first to be offered a place at university. He went to the London College of Printing (now called London College of Communication, University of the Arts). This particular piece was concerned with making a product that appeared to be one of many in a department store but on closer inspection revealed itself to be something extraordinary.
When he was a small child he was never comfortable playing with guns, cars and toy soldiers; he much preferred the dolls and dressing up. Never allowed to wear make up as a child, Adrian takes revenge on society with a fully working 'Beauty Boy Make Up Kit' so you can be 'pretty like Mom!’

Access to Art & Design at The Working Men's College, London

The Working Men's College is the oldest college of general education in Britain and is, after The Royal Academy Schools and The Royal College of Art, the oldest arts college in Britain.

The Access to Art & Design course is for students who wish to make an application to a degree or other course of higher education in the field of art or design. The Access system is the recognised route for mature students who wish to go on to study art & design at university. This is a highly successful course with excellent results in terms of placing students on appropriate degree courses. The course offers a solid introduction to the basic skills and ideas, which inform art and design practice and goes on to introduce students to methods of dealing with the creative process. At the same time, the course encourages them to discover their individual abilities and direct them towards the particular area of art and design, which they wish to study. The course offers modules in Fine Art, Graphics, 3-Dimensional Design Art Hisory, Printmaking, and Fashion and Textile Design. It also caters for students who wish to study Illustration, Product Design, Printmaking and Photography.

The full time course lasts for one year (3 days per week for 32 weeks). A part time option is available for two evenings per week for two years.
